Introduction
Welcome to the course on Hybrid and Battery electric Vehicle Powertrain Design and Development. This course has been developed by the Centre For Mechatronics and Hybrid Technologies (CMHT) at McMaster University in collaboration with our industry partners.
This module provides you with an introduction to the course as well as an overview of CMHT.
Course overview and learning outcomes:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge of the key aspects of the design and development of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). An overview of the course and its learning outcomes is provided.
Why do we need Electric Vehicles?
Conventional cars have transformed our lives. However, our current mode transportation impacts our environment and our health. It is no longer sustainable given the increasing number of cars around the world. In this context, the benefits of electrified vehicles are presented and discussed.
History and Introduction to HEVs:
Electric vehicles are not new! This module provides a brief overview of their history and their development.
Hybrid Vehicle Configurations
This module considers the overall efficiency of conventional car and copares it to different forms of electrified vehicles. The key components of electrified vehicles are introduced.
HEV Powertrain and Configurations:
Hybrid electric vehicles and powertrains can have different configurations and architectures. This module considers the micro, the mild and the full hybrid powertrain categories. It also introduces the series, the parallel, and the series-parallel powertrain configurations.
Electrification Challenges:
This module considers the factors that have impeded the development and market penetration of Electric Vehicles.
